        Introduction:

In today's knowledge economy, intellectual assets ("IA") (which includes intellectual property ("IP")) are the primary drivers of corporate earnings for many enterprises. Businesses do not fully appreciate the "value generating" ability of IA and IP as yet. Thus, companies have neglected to actively manage their IA and IP portfolio while investors have encountered problems in accurately assessing the value of IA and IP.

As Chinese companies continue to grow domestically and expand internationally, it is timely to consider how Chinese companies can evolve their strategies to preserve and maintain IA and IP values so as to sustain its global competitiveness.

        OBJECTIVE:

This Summit aims to be the first IA and IP management conference in China. Its objective is to demystify IA/IP management and its day-to-day application in real business for senior business and management executives, entrepreneurs, investors and IP-related professionals.

             PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP  ( 26 October 2006)

IAM generates value by enabling more effective technology licensing and lowering intellectual property creation and maintenance costs. In addition, IAM can generate value by helping create new uses for dormant intellectual property, and by enabling a company to better align its R&D with strategic business goals.

This workshop will provide participants with an overview of IAM, and its role in today's businesses. It will discuss management strategies that minimize the cost of IA/IP portfolio and maximize the revenue created by those rights. This primer workshop will prepare participants for the Main Conference.

It will also explore the various IAM models, measurement systems and intellectual assets reporting -E.g. identifying potentially valuable IP when it is developed; evaluating it in order to determine the appropriate form legal protection should take; in the case of IP that is to be licensed, how does one identify suitable licensees and negotiating a mutually acceptable license; IP originating organization must also be on the alert for other organizations making unauthorized use of their protected IP and be prepared to challenge them, in the courts, if necessary.
